Golf Tips from the Pro
The Reverse Pivot
There is a misconception in striking the ball, that the ball must be lifted by the club to get it airborne. Nothing could be further from the truth. The correct way of striking the ball involves a descending blow, catching the ball before the bottom of your swing arc and trapping it against the turf. Too many players take a mighty swing and actually fall back in an attempt to lift the ball in the air, creating a reverse weight shift. Here is a great drill to get yourself into the correct striking position. Assume a normal stance and make a conventional backswing. Just after impact on the downswing, step toward the target with your right foot, like you’re walking after the ball. This move not only prevents a reverse pivot, but helps you obtain a full release with your body as well as your arms and hands. Keep this tip in mind next time you see one of your buddies trying to hit it out of the park, tell him to walk through to greater power and accuracy.
